You must fill out and submit a Volunteer/Docent Application and complete a required criminal background check (no cost) at least 2 weeks prior to your desired Orientation Session. Criminal background checks must be completed on zoo grounds and are available in the Zoo Gift Shop. Our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you by phone or email to confirm your application and orientation date.
All new Zoo volunteers must attend ONE volunteer orientation session. All sessions are held at Columbian Park Zoo and will last approximately 90 minutes. An orientation session is required in order to volunteer

Are you an energetic and committed individual who is looking to share your interest in animals with others? Volunteer Educators assist the Education Department by assisting with various learning experiences including animal encounters, group presentations and patron interactions throughout the zoo. We are looking for individuals who can make at least a year-long commitment.

Are you a social butterfly looking for an opportunity to work in a beautiful garden setting? Volunteers are needed to work scheduled Butterfly Garden shifts from late May through early September. Shifts are available 7 days a week, but volunteers must be able to commit to at least 1 shift per week for a minimum of 6 weeks.
Training is provided, as we teach you the basics regarding butterfly and garden plant identification, zoo history and FAQs, customer service and interpretation. Must be 18 or older to apply.
Would your company or organization like to spend a few hours helping the zoo? Select weekend dates are available in the spring and fall for groups of 15 individuals or less.
