Don’t leave firearms unsecured in your vehicle
The Lafayette Police Department would like to remind firearm owners to responsibly store their weapons safely and securely. A motor vehicle is not a secure place to store a firearm. If you do choose to leave a firearm unattended in a vehicle, consider using a locked case that is securely fastened to your vehicle.
The Lafayette Police Department has seen an increase in the reports of stolen firearms out of vehicles that were left unlocked. In 2017 there were 31 reported thefts of firearms from vehicles. Of those 31 thefts, at least 21 were from unlocked vehicles. In 2018 we have had 9 reports of thefts of firearms from vehicles with all 9 coming from unlocked vehicles.
