The Lafayette Police Department and area hospitals noticed an increase in spice related calls over the July 28th, 29th weekend. The drug “spice” is a leafy substance, sprayed with chemicals, and smoked in a similar fashion to marijuana. The use of spice, sold under names like K2, Green Giant, Wicked X, Skunk, Moon Rocks, is on the rise, causing increasing numbers of adverse and even fatal effects. Spice is sometimes referred to as “legal” or synthetic marijuana. These monikers are misleading and dangerous. Spice is not safe in any amount and the effects of its use are most similar to PCP. Spice is addictive, can cause hallucinations, tremors, paranoia, and even death.
Police departments, along with EMS and medical systems are dealing with increased problems associated with the dangerous side effects of spice. Over the last weekend the Lafayette Police Department responded to at least 10 calls for service, attributed directly to the use of spice. Many of the calls resulted in arrests or the need for emergency medical services. The Lafayette Police warn the public to be aware of the dangers of spice and under no circumstances is this substance safe.
