UPDATE: Lafayette Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting
UPDATE: The Lafayette Police Department is able to provide the following additional information at this time. The Officer involved in the shooting is Specialist Ian O’Shields. Specialist O’Shields is a 12 year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department. As per department procedure Specialist O’Shields remains on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Dustin Borders was shot one time in the hip, he remains hospitalized in stable condition. Borders was arrested on the warrant for Resisting Law Enforcement with a vehicle; a Level 6 Felony, Intimidation while armed with a deadly weapon; a Level 5 Felony, Criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon; a Level 2 Felony, Criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon; a Level 6 Felony, and Resisting law enforcement while armed with a deadly weapon; a Level 6 Felony.
The criminal and internal investigation is ongoing.

The Lafayette Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 5:35 pm on today’s date. Officers with the Lafayette Street Crimes Unit arrived at 2500 Derbyshire Ct, West Lafayette, IN at approximately 1:00 pm in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant on Dustin Borders (white male, 26 years old). The warrant was for a charge of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle; a Level 6 Felony.
Officers with the Street Crimes Unit confirmed that Borders was inside the residence and later learned that a female, Morgan Edmondson (white female, 26 years old), was also inside. Borders subsequently barricaded himself inside and made threats to harm Edmondson, himself, and officers. The Lafayette Police Department’s SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team were contacted at 3:00pm and negotiations were initiated at approximately 3:40 pm.
For roughly two hours, negotiators made over 10 phone calls to Borders and Edmondson; attempting to persuade Borders to exit the residence peacefully. During negotiations, Borders’ erratic behavior continued to escalate and the SWAT team made entry into the residence.
As SWAT officers entered the residence, Borders was directly overheard stating that he was going to kill Edmondson and himself. When officers made entry into the room that Borders and Edmondson were isolated in, Borders was observed confining Edmondson with a knife to her throat and hiding behind her. SWAT officers immediately initiated hostage rescue tactics and Borders was shot by a SWAT officer. Paramedics staged on scene immediately transported Borders to an area hospital for his injuries. As a precautionary measure, Edmondson was also transported to an area hospital.
At this time, the Lafayette Police Department is not releasing the name of the officer as parallel criminal and internal investigations have commenced. Additional information will be released when appropriate.
