In 2012, Water Works began converting to radio read meters. We are currently changing out approximately 3,000 meters per year, while simultaneously converting many existing touch read meters to radio as well. We can now read a meter route, that used to take most of the day to read, in the time it takes to drive through the neighborhood. The next step is the installation of towers that read these same meters from a computer instantaneously. Three of these towers, called gateways, are planned for installation in 2015. This has greatly enhanced our meter reading capabilities and has improved our overall efficiency tremendously. Of the over 29,000 meters we read monthly, over 50% are radio read.
